
Ms. Christal D. Long, M.A.T.
Biography
Ms. Christal D. Long hails from Prince George’s County, Maryland. She has been an educator for more than 15 years in both public (7 years) and private schools (8 years). She has a sincere love for science which is reflected in her career in the public and private school sector. Graduating from Bowie State University, Ms. Long obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology and later, a Master of Arts in Teaching. Staying current with the field of science, Ms. Long very recently served as a Research Teacher Captain during the 2020 Society for Science Research Teachers Conference and judged the Intel and Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fairs, held in May 2019.
While serving as a teacher in Prince George’s County Public Schools, Ms. Long taught International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology, Anatomy, Microbiology, and Algebra. She was also the first Middle College biology teacher for the Academy of Health Sciences in Prince George’s County Public Schools. Currently, Ms. Long is a science teacher at From the Heart Christian School, where she is affectionately known as Ms. “C” Long, the first sister of the trilogy. Since coming to From the Heart Christian School, Ms. C. Long teaches or has taught AP Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science. She is also the Science Professional Learning Community (PLC) Leader and STEM Fair Coordinator for the FTHCS elementary, middle, and high school STEM Fairs.
Ms. C. Long has received extensive training from AP and IB Conferences and Workshops, the National Science Teachers Association, and the Society for Science organization. As the K-12 Science PLC Leader and Coordinator, she provides training on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), effective classroom practices, facilitating successful STEM fairs, NGSS concepts and skills at every grade level, and interdisciplinary NGSS lessons in elementary and middle school classes. Ms. Long is also a certified Curriculum Trak Trainer, with expertise in curriculum mapping, lesson plan development, and use of the electronic tools of the Curriculum Trak online program. Ms. Christal Long’s background and training have afforded her the opportunity to provide additional professional development and training on the following:1) Writing and developing science curriculum based on national and state standards, 2) Utilizing Understanding by Design (UbD) templates to write performance-based Unit Plans and Lessons, 3) Teaching concepts and skills identified in the Next Generation Science Standards, and 4) Effectively teaching engaging content for improving critical and analytical skills of students.
Students taught by Ms. Christal Long have won Regional Stem Fairs and achieved Grand Prize Awards that took them to Intel and Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fairs. Many others have graduated from From the Heart Christian School and furthered their educational goals by attending some of the most prestigious colleges in the world. Among those colleges are Yale University, MIT, Notre Dame, Fordham University, Hampton University, Spelman College and so many others.
